We all have mental health, just as we all have physical health. Poor mental health can strike at any time and can affect us all.

As a society, generally we are not as good at taking care of our mental health like we do our physical health. This means that people may not know how to support a friend, family member or colleague experiencing a mental health issue, or where to go for help with their own mental health.

Research from the HSE - Labour Force Survey shows that in 2022/23, there we an estimated 875,000 workers experiencing work-related stress, depression or anxiety, which accounted for 49% of all work related ill health and 54% of all working days lost due to work-related ill health.

According to data from CIPD, 76% of employees report moderate-to-high or high levels of stress with heavy workloads and management style most commonly to blame, whilst 33% report that high levels of stress impacts their productivity.

We believe that, despite the how high these statistics are, the good news is - it is in your organisations control to do something about this!

Benenden Health's report shares the main reasons for employees’ reticence to discuss their mental wellbeing in the workplace included, thinking people won’t believe they can do their job effectively (33%), worrying people will treat them differently (27%), being concerned that people will talk about them (26%) and worrying that it will impact on their career progression (23%).

Once again, as tough as these are to read, the good news is - it is in your organisations control to do something about this!

Now more than ever with the current global situation where people's working patterns are changing and they are still, post-pandemic experiencing huge changes in their daily routine, it is your responsibility to care for the mental health of your teams.

Stand apart from others and make a positive shift to reducing stigma in the workplace and supporting positive conversations and attitudes to mental health.
