We know from the World Health organisation that globally over 700,000 people die due to suicide and there are many more people who attempt suicide.

Every suicide is a devastating loss that affects families, communities and entire countries can have long-lasting effects on the people left behind. Suicide happens in all age groups and was the fourth leading cause of death among 15–29-year-olds globally in 2019.

The Samaritans share that in the UK 6,588 people died by suicide in 2022, which is an average of 18 people a day, with males being 3 times more likely to die by suicide than females. There is also a huge financial impact associated and in 2022 alone, suicide incurred a cost of at least £9.58 billion. On average, each death by suicide carried a cost of £1.46 million.

We can see that suicide is a serious public health problem; however, suicides are preventable with timely, evidence-based and often low-cost interventions.

The National Centre for Suicide Preventaion, Education and Trainings programmes have been developed and assured through international partnerships with educational centres of excellence in mental health promotion and suicide prevention across the UK and within the Global community.
